I often hear people say they can’t be devoted to serving ministry because they’re waiting for God’s calling in their life. Sometimes we misunderstand God’s calling. We often think that only full-time ministry is the true calling, which is always what we are looking for. But in fact, God’s calling to us is a call to a new identity, not to do some tasks for God. The apostle Paul prayed for us: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” (Ephesians 1:18)
What an honor! Our Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth, calls us to be His children! When we accept God’s calling and salvation, we not only have our sins forgiven, have eternal life, and have the indwelling Holy Spirit, but more importantly, we have a new identity! In this turbulent world, many, especially young people, have no confidence in themselves. They do not know their identity and are often influenced by their peers when seeking their purpose in life. But it is when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior that we know our true identity. This is God’s calling to us!
Everything I do begins with that identity when I know who I am. I am of God! I am the child of God, and this is my identity! As a doctor, I can use my intellectual abilities to serve God and others. You can do the same! Whether you’re a company employee, a homemaker, or a garbage collector, you can serve God and others because your most important identity is a child of God!
No matter what industry you are in or what kind of job you do, it is the outward manifestation of your identity. Therefore, every believing Christian has received this calling, and everyone serves God full-time. May we all live out this new life!
